The Weekend Wrapup 11.26.11

Belated Happy Thanksgiving monkeys! Here’s what went on while you were drunk and face deep in turkey.

Americas:

• Punching in one of the worst Thanksgiving weeks in history, the DOW fell 4.8%, the NASDAQ 5.1%, while the S&P slipped another 4.7%. Canada’s TSX also dropped to a 2 month low (down over 6% MTD), while Brazil and Mexico are also in the red, falling 3.3% (down 6% MTD) and 4% respectively.

• Gold purchases by Central banks have risen three-fold since 2010 while ETFs have also been ramping up their holdings over the year, peaking the day before Turkey Day. Bullish yes, but considering CB’s like Mexico haven’t even seen their own holdings and with repatriations already starting, should we be looking into the old paper/physical gold arb trade again?

Improved WSO Company Database Live! Please help the WSO Community.

wso-comp-db.jpg

Ok guys, this took a lot more work than it looks like, but we have finally released the newest version of the WSO Company Database: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/wso-company-database

This database right now is just a shell. Without help from the community, it will largely remain a shell and not be very useful. If everyone pitches in, it could be an incredibly valuable tool (the comp data alone would be very cool to know by company).

Over the years I've had a lot of people ask how they can give back to WSO - this is how. Besides the 30 banana points we are rewarding each user that contributes (for each review, company or compensation data point added), we also will be giving 1 free week access to our job board for users that add all three forms for one company (or three forms total). Details are above the table on the database page.

Weekend Wars: Drones vs. Moans

Over the past few weeks, I have been dealing with a very annoying neighbor. She can't shut up, moans, bitches and whines about every damn thing, but she's a good lay so I tolerate. It got me thinking about the workplace and how terrible it is to deal with annoying co-workers. You know what they say "co-workers, can't fuck'em, can't kill'em."

So many of you guys are putting in 80+ hour work weeks, dodging hipster turds on your way to work and getting the doormat treatment from your MDs, already. Can there be anything worse on top of that than a pain-in-the-ass colleague?

Coming Soon: Another Bailout Fund

beatings-and-bailouts.jpg

It was only a matter of time before discussions about a futures bailout fund turned serious in the wake of MF Global's collapse. MF customers could be on the hook for more than a billion dollars with no chance of recovery. So it stands to reason that investors in the futures market would start clamoring for some type of protection.

The NFA is now working with the CME and other futures markets participants to lay the groundwork for some type of insurance for futures accounts, be it a GSE model like the SIPC or a completely private bailout fund contributed to by market participants.

Quote:

"Could there be a SIPC-type approach for futures? Yes," said Don Horwitz, of Oyster Consulting in Chicago. "It's not as if they could just overlay it, there are some costs, but this will be one of the things I'd think would be considered."

What is the minimum you need to be content?

So obviously most people here want a house in the Hampton with a yacht or something to that effect, but what is the bare minimum you would to have an increase in revenue not matter that much?

My list:

-a nice house... doesn't have to be too big, just enough rooms for my family, an office, and a sweet basement with...
-the newest technology. I don't want every tablet out there, but I'd like to keep up with technology. (sweet video game setup, badass TV, maybe a projector, with surround sound, nice computer)
-a car with AIR CONDITIONING and a CD player that isn't ghetto as hell (cheap Chevy is fine by me)
-to be able to send my son to the best schools possible
-health insurance
-good and healthy food... I love me some good food, not much can beat a nice meal

I just want to give a shout-out to the WSO team and all the monkeys that take the time to post regularly on the site.

After a poor recruitment preparation last spring, I consider myself lucky to get my SA in asset management. Keeping up with WSO over the summer, I devoted myself to learn everything I could about trying to land a banking position, as well as other seemingly trivial yet vital info to help prep for interviews (i.e. why this city?, or what to wear). Much in part to the advice offered on WSO, and persistence, I was able to land a FT banking position - its one of the best feelings in the world.

Leveraged Pension Funds

Pensions.jpeg

While unionized teachers may still call young analysts “Banksters,” the intial root of their hatred is simple. They lost out. Not too long ago, underpaid pension fund managers squandered retirement dollars on mindlessly complicated MBS deals with greedy banksters. Ya, right.

A little after this affair made headlines, Novy-Marx, a Kellogg professor, wrote a paper describing that pension funds were massively underfunded, even way before the crash. To Novy-Marx, the problem was the overly zealous 8% return that these fund managers had promised and contracted. With the help of one of his students, the two estimated the unfunded gap to be over 3 trillion dollars- a figure that scared some to believe that a ruckus in the bond market was a sure fate. When I first read their paper, I could not help but say- “holy shit, that’s a big fucking number.”

Why is college so expensive?

cost2.jpg

So obviously college tuition increases by an obscene amount year over year not because it's getting that much more valuable or less efficient, so it's got to be something else. I've always assumed that the college tuition bubble was perpetuated by the government offering student loans/grants to just about anyone even if they go on to study Art History or whatever, creating artificial demand from those whose wouldn't want/be able to go to college if those loans were not available.

But isn't it possible that the Federal Reserve is largely responsible for it as well? Or is it just simply a matter of supply and demand?

Euro Sovereign Debt CDS Risk

I was talking to a friend today about where we think most of the CDS exposure to Euro debt lies. Afterwards, I came across this article from Bloomberg. It's a good read to pass along.

"Guarantees provided by U.S. lenders on government, bank and corporate debt in those countries [Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Italy] rose by $80.7 billion to $518 billion, according to the Bank for International Settlements. Almost all of those are credit-default swaps, said two people familiar with the numbers, accounting for two-thirds of the total related to the five nations, BIS data show."

The article also goes through Dexia and AIG. Thoughts?
