Try unconventional ways to get a job?

So i'm currently studying finance at a university in Sweden. With my first year finished i'm looking to get a part time job for some valuable work experience as well as networking opportunities. However, I have absolutely no prior work experience in the field of bank or support which makes me somewhat of an unattractive employee.

So with my (very) limited work experience, which could be described as irrelevant, I might have a hard time actually finding something. Due to reasons stated I thought maybe there's still a chance, maybe I could try job hunting in unconventional ways.

I currently work at a bulge bracket bank in their retail segment as an intern. I was recently offered a position at a boutique IB specializing in M&A, and would like to have the M&A experience while remaining at the bank I am currently at as I see future opportunities moving up.

Mod Note (Andy): Make sure to bookmark this page as this will be the cumulative thread for 2016 SA IBD info and added to the frontpage each week to help collect more info

As banks recruit earlier and earlier, I thought it would be good to have a dedicated thread for recruiting this fall. I know from first hand that some accelerated processes are kicking off so it might be beneficial to start aggregating data. This will help keep track of what's going on and the individual deadlines for online applications.

Can someone explain the Investment Banking hierarchy?

I get that it goes like this

Analyst
Associate
VP
SVP (or executive director)
Managing Director

However, what is after Managing Director? Is there a managing director for each 'division'?

This image is supposed to be of Goldman Sachs new structure. Does that mean there is one MD for Debt Writing, one for Equity Writing, one for ICBC, one for Management Fees, etc etc. And that all those MD's report to the heads of their 'division'? So does that mean that the head MD of equity writing, financial advisory, underwriting, and debt writing all report to the MD of the entire Investment Banking division?

Is an online MBA perceived as worse than actual MBA?

I recently received a Business Analyst position at a large firm (I do not wish to disclose) in the branch located in my town. The department is very large and I do not wish to transfer as their are a combination of factors I know here (status at my office , family in my hometown, easier professional mobility, etc.). I want to go back to school for an MBA but the only program in my range is at the school I attended for my undergrad.

The Great Escape - 5 tips for leaving the Back Office

$

I like to compare my experience of the Back Office, with one of the final scenes in Lord of the Rings. Towards the end of the Return of the King, there is a moment where Frodo, the hairy footed rapscallion that he is, looks as though he is going to blow everything and keep the one ring for himself. The look on Sam's face at this moment is exactly how I felt every Monday morning at 9AM, trudging through Canary Wharf towards another day in IT. Fear, desperation and above all else, a feeling of helplessness. After a year's worth of applications, I've recently accepted a job in Equity Research and thought I'd give a few tips to anyone else hoping to make the jump.

1. Start applying. All the banks will feed you some bs about 'internal mobility' and how you can move from the Back Office to the Front Office. Speaking from experience, this is rare - it does happen, but it's by no means a certainty. Better to look for entry level jobs at other places, or even summer internships that can then be converted.

Top MBAs completely shifting away from investment banking?

$

Well, according to Bloomberg, that's true, though likely not as big a surprise to the forums here. What is a bit surprising to me is seeing the complete shift in banking v. technology that is charted in the article and the subsequent breakdown by schools shortly thereafter.

For those in graduate school or simply looking to break into the sell side, how does this sit with you? Is the lure really wearing off or does this mean more opportunity for those previously excluded from the recruiting process? If the latter, what does that say about the industry in general?

Financial & Valuation Modeling Boot-Camp

Financial modeling is a skill that any investment banking analyst will have to master. Although the majority of investment banks and other financial firms now have formal training programs, many students and prospective finance professionals are choosing enroll in self-study financial modeling training programs to look more competitive to potential employers and position themselves as a valuable asset to the firm from Day 1.

Wall Street Oasis presents 35% off Wall Street Prep's popular 3-day Investment Banking Boot Camps. ***NOTE: When you register with a .edu address the discount will be applied upon checkout ...if you are a student without a .edu address please contact Wall Street Prep directly. Discounts do not apply to seminars run by CFA Societies.***

If you can't attend a boot camp, train yourself with Wall Street Prep's popular Self-Study programs and get 15% off as a visitor from WSO! You won't find that deal anywhere else. If you are not a student, you can still get 15% off the live IB Bootcamps by clicking below.

Next Steps After Banking

I am currently in my third year as an analyst at a small investment bank in the Mid-Atlantic. Its a small firm but the two senior guys each did times at much larger banks and I have gotten what I believe to be I solid lower middle market deal experience. Today, I had a discussion about what I would like to do next come May when my third year is up (there is no possibility of promotion upwards due to our the firm's size).

How to establish common ground in an e-mail?

Hi guys,

I have been having trouble getting responses during cold e-mails to non-alumni.

What is the best way to establish common ground during a cold e-mail? For example, I am a non-target student and I try send e-mails to other non-targets. What is the best way to seamlessly put it in the e-mail?
