Hey WSO,

What would be the best method to engage a headhunter in the South? I'm looking specifically at New Orleans, Houston and Dallas, and really looking for either an equity analyst role, foundation/ fund of funds, or FP&A.

Thanks,

$m or $mm

$m or $mm?

I prefer $m.

There is only one 'm' in millions.

While M = 1000 in Roman numerology and M^2 = MM, that's a weak-arse justification and an unnecessary letter.

The second m is redundant. Who the hell would confuse $m as referring to anything other than millions.

Can anyone justify $mm on any basis other than "it's a stupid industry custom"?

Harvard Extension School - Looked Upon Unfavourably in MBA Applications?

Hi guys,

I am looking to gain some knowledge in a non-finance field that I am interested in about from Harvard's Extension School - am even strongly considering taking a graduate degree (Masters) from there.

I have solid work exp and come from a good undergrad school with good grades, and I am keen to apply to HBS (or really, M7 MBAs in general) in the future... the thing is, I'm not sure if this "Masters" will affect me negatively.

Anyone with insights on this?

Cheers.

Accelerators

Does anyone out there have experience with accelerators in the VC space? One of the better ones approached me about joining in a mentor role but after speaking they soft mentioned the option of me coming on full time in a very senior role. I don't dislike what I do in PE but I've had the bug to do something different and have been exploring other options recently (buying an operating company which I've spent some DD dollars on, or joining a funded startup as an exec).

Wall Street Oasis Content Management Intern Needed

Wall Street Oasis is looking for one intern to help me manage our content, specifically the homepage, forum and blog content, and help manage the contributing authors. This is considered the best internship we have to offer because of the amount of hands-on experience you will have working directly with me, the inside look you will have at how the site runs, and if you're already a super-user of the site then it will be very easy for you to get off to a running start on your projects.

The internship is unpaid, but tangible/intangible benefits you will receive are listed below. You will be working remotely and communicating with me at least once per week (via chat/email).

If you're looking for that internship to get your foot in the door and fill your resume with some real-world experience for a large financial community, this is the perfect opportunity for you.

The Great Strategic Game of Life (1/2)

Mod Note (Andy): #TBT Throwback Thursday - this was originally posted on 9/7/12. To see all of our top content from the past, click here.

Discussions that center upon issues such as "which b-school is better", "M&A, ECM or DCM" and "which desk within S&T" usually make me uneasy. Don't get me wrong, I am not a madman, and I realize the importance of getting as many right choices as possible. In select cases I will even stand up for your right to an opinion (unless you're a douche).

My point here is that putting too much effort in issues that are tactical in nature will drain precious time that you could be employing in learning how to be better at something that I will call, for the lack of a better name, the great strategic game of life. Let me share a little framework that I use when I get to fate-changing professional bifurcations and follow up with a few stories.

Advice for an ex-IB MD: What to read if you want to go into finance

I often get asked by young students or recent graduates what books they should be reading to succeed. I was a Computer Science major from an emerging market country. I started at an Investment Bank in a quant role in 1999, and eventually made Managing Director in Sales at age 34. These are the books I wish I had read when starting out.

The first set are all about general life skills. If you want to learn about modeling skills than there are a lot of websites out there that can teach you that, but that isn't going to change your life's trajectory. My view is that Finance is about people not numbers, the sooner you realize that, the faster your career will progress. So here's the list I would have liked to have given my 20 year old self:

INTRODUCING: The WSO Applicant Database. Take 5 minutes on WSO to Reach Hundreds of Finance Recruiters and Finance Companies

Given that we have built up relationships with hundreds of companies and finance recruiters, we thought instead of just a simple job board (which you can find right here), we would also create a WSO Applicant Database.

This vision for the database is to allow all WSO users to create a detailed "Applicant Profile" that can be used by recruiters and companies to find great talent. It is similar to an online resume you see on LinkedIn, but with a lot more detail around actual skills relevant to financial positions, scores and certifications so that recruiters can use it to filter through candidates that are a great match for their spots.
