6 Tips To Boost Your Confidence And Nail Your Next Job Interview

Mod Note (Andy) - as the year comes to an end we're reposting the top discussions from 2015, this one ranks #42 and was originally posted 11/13/2015.

Confidence matters. Often it matters more than whether or not you're actually qualified.

Hewlett Packard discovered this years ago...

They were researching the discrepancy between men and women in upper management. Sexism was certainly a potential factor. But they found another factor contributing as well.

Men would apply for promotions when they met only 60% of the criteria. Women waited until they had 100%.

The result? Men received more promotions.

Not because they were better suited for the job. But because they raised their hands and said, "I want it."

My point in sharing this story is to illustrate that in life, and especially in the working world, your raw talent is far from the only thing that matters.

Your confidence, your willingness to extend yourself, your belief that you'll succeed, all these things have a massive impact on whether or not you'll get that new job you're applying for or your next promotion.

Endowments & Foundations Part 1: A Basic Overview

I think the most useful threads I've read on this site were threads from people like @BlackHat who explained a specific industry in finance and what they do. They always helped while I was in undergrad and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do so I thought this might help some people potentially looking into the industry.

Endowments & Foundations (E&Fs) are an industry that doesn't come up too much on this site and when I was evaluating my job offer there weren't a lot of resources out there to help my decision. Over the next few months I'm going to post a few threads like this one that go into detail on various aspects of E&Fs and answer any questions people may have about the industry. To give you my background, I currently work as a Jr. Analyst at one of the largest E&Fs in the US. Let's get started with a basic overview of the industry, how it works, and what a typical day is like.

Things are okay now, but I got shithoused in the LEH bankruptcy. My stock went to zero, I had no income, and my portfolio got cut in half. Those were dark days.

I vowed two things:
1) To never put myself in a position where I could lose it all again, and
2) To have some fun for a change, for crying out loud.

Seriously. I had just spent the last nine years trading and didn't do anything fun. I went about 3-4 years between vacations once, without even taking a day off. When I got home at night, I would get right on the Bloomberg terminal. On the weekends, I read financial books.

All that dedication has paid off, but it was a crummy way to live.

Corporate Development Manager - Q&A

Reading through @harvardgrad08's posts I think this type of contribution is extremely helpful in de-mystifying certain career fields, especially the lessor known Corporate Development field as well as exit ops out of Big 4 Audit. So I wanted to share my story and hopefully help some folks better understand what can and can't be reasonably accomplished if you put your mind to it. Feel free to ask any question and I'll do my best to answer.

My work history working from present back words:
Currently interviewing for
1.) Senior Manager, Corporate Development @ a mid size (think $2-$5 bil revenue) Private Equity owned Portfolio Company in the Healthcare/ Medical Device industry. I think I have a great shot at landing the role, really a lateral move for me w a substantial bump in salary.
2.) Private Equity Associate- Deal team of a start up PE fund

Oil and Gas Overview

Hopefully this post will generate some debate with regards to profiting from the recent drop in oil prices. As we have done in the past, we will do a sector overview and we will unlikely hit on every aspect (that would require far too much work).

If Oil and Gas is not of interest to you, we have done the following sector overviews:

Financial Institutions Group | TMT (Part 1) and TMT (Part 2) | Healthcare | Consumer

*To access the above overviews simply visit our blog on WSO , WallStreetPlayboys.com or use the track feature on WSO.

Overview: The oil market is seeing significant pressure from the declining value of crude oil. The price of crude has dropped from ~$105 in June of 2014 to ~$55 as of late December (West Texas Intermediate - WTI). In addition, the price of Brent has fallen from ~$105 to ~$60 in the same time period. For those that are interested the difference between Brent Crude and WTI crude, here it is:

Brent Crude: Extracted from the North Sea and comprises of Brent Blend, Forties Blend, Oseberg and Ekofisk crudes (also known as the BFOE Quotation)

WTI Crude: This is the underlying commodity of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's oil futures contracts. WTI is lighter and sweeter than Brent, and considerably lighter and sweeter than Dubai or Oman.

Why the Price Difference: Pretty basic here, the price differential is due to the increased transportation cost from Oklahoma to Louisiana. There is limited pipeline capacity. While this is likely extremely basic for those that work in the space, if you're new to the space, the price differential of ~$4-5 is confusing on a glance.

What's the best way to kill it in 2016? Make some pathetically impotent new year's resolutions, or take stock of how you killed it in 2015 and use it to plan ahead...

Here in Vail, with the help of a few clients, I've been designing a year-end process that I plan to roll out next year as a two-day winter retreat.

Like all of my work I've been focused on building an incredibly rigorous yet simple two-step process for propelling yourself out of this year and into next...

STEP ONE: REVIEW 2015.

Best Way to Manage Small Amount of Family Money?

Hi all, I graduated college in 2014 and have been working as a proprietary equity trader since then for around 1.5 years.

I've started trading some Forex since December and have been doing pretty darn well. I have two family members who want to initially invest around $5 - 10k total for me to trade Forex for them, but I am not too familiar with how to structure this in an efficient way.

Switching from Big 4 to Acquisitions: My Story

I've received a lot of PMs over the months about how I switched from Big 4 audit to REIT acquisitions. Here is the path I took and some suggestions for those who are trying to make the switch. I welcome other RE veterans to post their suggestions as well...

I started my career in the Banking audit group for one of the Big 4 in the Northeast. My love of RE began while auditing the commercial loan portfolio for a large bank. My interest grew as I spoke with real estate professionals and read scores of books/articles. At the end of my first busy season, I decided to make the jump.

Unfortunately, as many of you will find, shaking the accounting/CPA background can be difficult to do (despite what they tell you in school). For my search, I used recruiters (which were of little help to me) and applied to online postings (which I had the most success with). As you will find, every recruiter I reached out to kept pushing me into accounting type roles despite my insistence that I wanted to work in RE. During my search, I read as much as I could about real estate investing and took a BIWS RE modeling course, all with the goal of being able to craft my story and show my interest in RE.

Rationale behind: Why should I pay $80 for a company with MVequity=100 and cash =20?

if MVequity=100 and cash =20, how much should I pay for this company?
The EV equation would imply EV=MVequity - Cash =80

Best Practices For Recovering From Poor Reviews?

$
0
0

I'm a second year analyst and joined an EB in NY about a year from ago a MM shop in Chicago and have gotten some mediocre / poor reviews (and was compensated accordingly). The feedback was that I was hard working but had poor attention to detail. I'm not going to give any excuses, I messed up, but how can I best recover my reputation and standing? I don't have a buyside gig locked down yet and would like to spend another year here so I want to get better and improve.

Does anyone else have experience recovering from a bad review to become a solid / top analyst?

Thanks

January 2016 Data Update 1: The US Equity Markets

$

Like most of you, I start every new year with optimism and hopeful resolutions, but the first week each year for the last two decades has been what I term my "Moneyball" week. During the week, I downloaded the raw data on every publicly traded company that is listed globally, and worked at converting that data into the industry averages that you see on my website.

I performed the analyses to keep myself grounded, since it is so easy to form preconceptions about market and corporate behavior that have no basis in reality. As I update the data, I will be doing a series of posts on how the numbers have or have not changed during the course of the last year. In this, the first of the series, I will start by looking at US equity markets, as we start the new year.

Looking Back

It was not a good year for US equity markets, but given circumstances, it could have been a lot worse. The S&P 500 was almost unchanged during the course of the year, though indices of some subsets of the market did worse:
